Since the announcement of Opill's FDA approval in July of 2023, the question on everyone's mind is how much the pill cost will. Out-of-pocket birth control can cost up to $50 a pack for uninsured individuals but many insurances including Medicaid provide the pill for free or reduced costs. Unfortunately for many, being insured consistently is an unreachable goal leaving people needing to take their birth control irregularly. That's where Opill comes in. Opill is a consistent and reliable birth control pill that doesn't require a prescription, refill, or insurance authorization to access. That means you can take Opill when you want to and stop when you want to. Opill costs $19.99 for one pack and $49.99 for a three-month bulk supply. It can be found at most retail pharmacies or online and since there isn't a need for a prescription, you don't have to pay for unnecessary clinic visits.
A Kaiser Family Foundation survey has shown that the current price for Opill is on par with what women have reported being willing to spend on OTC birth control. Only 1 in 6 women reported being willing to spend up to $20 on OTC birth control but that was before the pill had rolled out. Opill has only recently hit the shelves so only time will tell how many consumers take advantage of it. But so far, the price doesn't seem to be a major deterrent.
