Over-The-Counter Birth Control Worldwide
More than 100 countries around the world offer birth control pills. In March 2024, the United States was added to the list—the map below discusses which countries already have over-the-counter birth control options. Opill is essential in the United States after the recent overturn of Roe v Wade in June 2022, which allows states to individually put restrictions on when a birthing body may have an abortion. This is the first ever nonprescription daily oral contraceptive that the FDA has approved. With the rise of Opill on the shelves, there is an apparent hope that it will reduce barriers to accessing oral contraceptives and allow people to take back their autonomy.
